The Importance of Literacy for the PEI Labour Force and the Labour Market

Some basics literacy statistics from the 2003 IALS survey

  • Almost 46% of youth 16-25 have low literacy performance
  • 43% of Islanders have low literacy levels (level 1 & 2). Approximately 60% are employed.
  • Percentage of those 15 years and over with less than high school: 35%

Top five sectors with concentrations of workers with low literacy:

  1. Manufacturing
  2. Trade, finance, insurance, real estate, and leasing
  3. Forestry, fishing, mining, oil and gas
  4. Agriculture
  5. Construction
